We are often asked which glow in the dark color offers the brightest illumination. Glow color selection is typically a crucial decision for matching to existing product branding, coordinating for dramatic accent reveal, or setting the proper mood. However for certain applications, glow brightness may be the leading factor over color. For example, in the safety market brightness and visibility generally take precedence over decorative appearance. When safety is an essential feature, glow output and duration are usually the more influential characteristics. In those situations where visibility is important, here are some tips on choosing the glow colors that create the brightest possible illumination.


Go for the Green
Put simply, yellow-green is the glow color most readily seen by the human eye and is therefore considered the most visible for glow in the dark materials. Does adding a custom daytime color impact the intensity of nightglow performance? Yes, generally the addition of a daytime color will come with some sacrifice of the nightglow performance. However many formulas can be modified and depending upon the design, there may be no meaningful impact on the ultimate brightness of the product. Yet for a distinctive appearance, a diffused and interesting color effect might enhance originality and be more desirable.


As a general rule of thumb, the brightest glow output is achieved without the addition of a daytime color.


A Closer Look

As with all glow materials, the brightest glow is always best viewed in full darkness and with dark-adjusted eyes. Your eyes need to be fully adjusted to the dark prior to evaluating materials for glow performance. This is similar to walking into a darkened movie theater. It usually takes your eyes a minute or two to acclimate to be able to see your way to your seat, especially when entering from a bright theater lobby. The same principle holds true when assessing glow materials for color, brightness and duration. The quickest way to adjust your eyes from sharp room light to sudden darkness is to close your eyes and slowly count to 5. When you open your eyes, they will rapidly adapt to the darker setting.
